What to Pack

Preparing for your adventure in Haida Gwaii involves more than just excitement; it’s important to pack wisely to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The unique climate and diverse activities available in the islands mean that thoughtful packing can greatly enhance your experience.

Clothing

Layering is key in Haida Gwaii, where the weather can change quickly. Here are some essentials to consider:

  • Lightweight Layers: Bring t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a warm fleece or sweater. This allows you to adjust your clothing based on the temperature.
  • Waterproof Jacket: A good quality waterproof jacket is essential for the occasional rain shower, which can occur year-round.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Pack sturdy hiking boots for exploring trails, as well as sandals or water shoes for beach and kayaking adventures.
  • Gum boots, or rubber boots, are a must-have for anyone visiting the islands. They provide excellent protection against wet and muddy conditions, whether you’re exploring the lush trails, walking along the beach, or navigating marshy areas. Look for a pair that fits well and has good traction, as this will help you stay stable on slippery surfaces.

Rain Gear

Investing in high-quality rain gear will make your adventures much more enjoyable. Here are some essentials to include:

  • Waterproof Jacket: A breathable, waterproof jacket with a hood will keep you dry during unexpected rain showers. Choose one with ventilation options for comfort while hiking.
  • Rain Pants: Consider lightweight, packable rain pants to wear over your regular clothing. These will help keep you dry during hikes and other outdoor activities.
  • Water-Resistant Backpack Cover: If you plan to hike or kayak, a cover will protect your backpack and gear from getting soaked.

With proper rain gear and gum boots, you’ll be ready to embrace the island’s natural beauty, regardless of the weather. Enjoy exploring Haida Gwaii without letting a little rain dampen your spirits!

Outdoor Gear

Depending on your planned activities, consider packing the following:

  • Daypack: A small backpack for hikes or day trips.
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while exploring the islands.
  • Sunscreen and Bug Spray: Protect yourself from sun exposure and insects, especially during the warmer months. We recommend tropical strength, as the bugs depend on how much rain has fallen immediately prior to your stay.
  • Swim Gear: If you plan to take a dip or go kayaking, don’t forget your swimsuit. Towels are provided. The water out front is 15 – 18°C degrees in the summer, and 12 – 14°C degrees in the winter, we also have a selection of wetsuits available if needed.
  • Gum / Wellington Boots:

Personal Items

While we provide many amenities, consider bringing personal items that will enhance your stay:

  • Toiletries: Bring your favorite personal care products, as local options may be limited.
